Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy
Friuli-Venezia Giulia is the most northeastern region of Italy. It lies on the Adriatic Sea and is bordered by Austria and Slovenia. My young friend Marta Cossettini lives in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, which she refers to as “Nel Dolce Nord Est” or “The Sweet Northeast.”
Marta is very proud of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, especially the agriturismi – local farms with accommodations for visitors. Her region is known for wine production, as well as cured meats and cheese, and farm house guests enjoy these foods during their stay.
In this guest post, Marta describes some of her favorite agriturismo.
The sweet north-east of Italy is a cradle of sea, lagoon, mountains and hills with culture, art, the most excellent wines, tasty cheeses, San Daniele prosciutto and a traditional cuisine. These are some of the reasons to visit Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
A particular feature of Italy - especially of this region - is the “agriturismo.” These little establishments are similar to bed and breakfasts, but they offer meals and beverages consisting of their own home-grown products and agricultural products of the area. So the food that you can taste is typical and genuine.
They also organize recreational, cultural, educational and sportive activities, as well as excursions. The agriturismo “homes” are exclusively in rural buildings found on farms where they grow agricultural crops, raise animals and make wine and oil.
In this remote corner of Italy, the lightblue chain of the Alps embrace the intense green of the hills that roll toward the plains that touch the sea. Friulia-Venezia Giulia always surprises its guests who reach a hut in the mountains to taste a sweet fresh Montasio cheese, go hiking or skiing in the Alps, explore a cave, relax at the beach, taste a fish soup looking at the Trieste sea, or walk through Udine or Gorizia center – precious cities with castles, museums and fine art.
The best way to look at the landscape is to enjoy a glass of our wine or one of our esteemed brandy-grappas that have made Friuli famous all over the world!
So let’s explore this awesome region. Here you have some famous agriturismi where you can stay. They are perfect for all kinds of people.

Marta Cossettini
Thoroughly enjoyed learning about this special area of Italy! Especially love the blend of Italy and the “swiss” atmosphere of the region. Not to mention, we LOVE an agriturismo as it offers an immersion into the true lifestyle. These have been added to our list!
