Let’s Send Kids Books To Nevis
Kids books are in short supply on many Caribbean Islands, so it’s wonderful when thoughtful guests tuck a few in their suitcase before leaving home and drop them off at local schools.
Now, books can also be sent to one island via a U.S. mailing address. This guest post, outlining ways to help school children on Nevis, was written by Julie Harper.
“The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!
Oh the places the children of Nevis can go thanks to the help of Nisbet Plantation Beach Club and its guests. The luxury resort, which was originally a sugar plantation dating back to 1778, actively supports the community and adopted a nearby primary school more than 12 years ago.
In addition to the resort staff helping the school by volunteering and supporting programs, Nisbet Plantation created a book donation program as an opportunity for guests to give back and even benefit the children of many of the resort staff members that guests get to know and love during their stay.
Bring kids books – deliver in person
Guests can bring new or gently used books (or school supplies) with them in their suitcase to the island and deliver them in person to the school. However, many guests feel inspired to help the island residents after visiting and meeting the people. Therefore, Nisbet Plantation provides other ways for guests to easily help.
Send kids books – save on shipping
First, guests can mail books and supplies after they return home to a US mailing address that the resort will then import to the island. This saves guests costs in shipping. In addition, Nisbet Plantation has donation boxes at the Front Desk and Nevis airport where guests can leave behind their local Eastern Caribbean (EC) change to directly benefit the school. Nisbet Plantation also hosts crab races on its beach during the holidays and all proceeds from the races benefit the schools.
On the small island of Nevis, simple gestures of leaving behind local change, bringing or mailing a book have made a big impact. Since the program began, the resort estimates that more than 5,000 books have been donated to Nisbet’s adopted school and schools throughout the island.
If you would like to make a difference on the island of Nevis, you can send school supplies and kids book donations to the address below. Click here for more information on this program.

Excellent article on the need for books for kids in the Caribbean.
I want to recommend the program Hand Across The Sea which is
sending books and adopting schools in the Eastern Caribbean.
Each year our travelers bring art supplies to the island of Dominica and school supplies which are easily tucked in to luggage. Books on the other hand are heavy and sending them through a program like Hands Across the Sea who coordinates with school staffs is an excellent way to support literacy for island children.
