Best La Jolla Beach Boutique Hotel
La Jolla beach hotels tend to be busy places, but one boutique property offers a sweet retreat with an ocean view. Scripps Inn faces the Pacific a few blocks south of La Jolla Cove – just far enough from the Children’s Pool seal colony to avoid the masses of visitors that the marine cuties attract.
I’ve lived in La Jolla most of my life, but only became aware of Scripps Inn when I was commissioned to write a San Diego guidebook. I liked the hotel then and am even more impressed with it now that it’s sporting a fresh beachy décor.
La Jolla beach neighborhood
It isn’t the hotel’s location that keeps it out of the limelight. It’s that the building is painted taupe and set back from Coast Boulevard, so of course the waves hitting the sand on the other side of the street get all the attention.
In fact, Scripps Inn is well located within easy walking distance of La Jolla shops and restaurants and almost next door to the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla. In addition to the lovely sea and sand across the street, another La Jolla beach – Windansea – is only a five-minute drive to the south, and you can snorkel or SCUBA at the La Jolla Cove just a short stroll up the street. Downtown San Diego is about 25-30 minutes away.
The hotel is also handy if you’re coming to town for one of our popular annual events. The La Jolla Concours d’Elegance, the La Jolla Holiday Parade, and the La Jolla Rough Water Swim all take place within walking distance.
La Jolla beach lodging
Scripps Inn offers 14 spacious room and suites, including three two-bedroom suites with kitchens and two junior deluxe suites with fireplaces and full ocean views. In total, five units come with a kitchen.
The hotel was built in 1930 by La Jolla philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps. At that time, Scripps Hospital was very nearby, and doctors and their families lived in the modest two-story building.
La Jolla beach breakfast
Guests start with day with complimentary pastries, beverages, and the local newspaper enjoyed on a shared wooden deck or in the privacy of guest rooms. Wi-fi is also free, but there’s a charge for parking and pets.
The deck is also a great place to enjoy a glass of wine and one of our stunning La Jolla beach sunsets. Seriously, if I didn’t have a house close by – I’d check in!
Cheers,
