101 Tips for Women Travelers
This little book is chockablock with great travel suggestions
I made a cup of tea about an hour ago and sat down to look at 101 TIPS FOR WOMEN TRAVELERS, edited by Harriet R. Lewis, Vice Chairman, Grand Circle Corporation.
Frankly I wasn’t expecting to learn very much. I’ve been writing travel articles, guidebooks, and blog posts for several decades, and I thought I knew all the tricks of the trade. However, I soon realized that this little gem of a book is chockablock with great suggestions that had never occurred to me – and they aren’t just applicable to women.
Harriet Lewis has collected travel tips from experienced travelers, Grand Circle Trip Leaders, Program Directors, and her office staff around the world. She also has woven in historical anecdotes of fearless female travelers from all cultures whose trailblazing cleared a path for the rest of us.
While I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Harriet face-to-face, I felt a common bond with her as soon as I read the section on “Giving back to the world we travel.” As you know from following Authentic Luxury Travel, I have strong feelings about voluntourism and making a difference in the developing world.
I especially value “Harriet’s Book Bag,” which provides suggestions for books that deepen the understanding of international destinations. I always make a point of reading a book set in the location I’m exploring, and have sometimes had trouble finding good historical fiction or non-fiction for certain counties. Harriet’s list will make that task much easier.
Here are some of my favorite tips:
- Rub your skin with a dryer sheet or Listerine to help discourage mosquitos.
- Carry snack bars or trail mix when you fly – but not to Australia where dried fruit is prohibited and will be confiscated. (This came as a surprise since I’ve traveled to Australia at least a dozen times in the course of writing five guidebooks about that country and never knew of this rule.)
- Don’t carry individually-wrapped wet wipes onto the plane in China. The foil wrapping sets off the super-sensitive metal detectors in Chinese airports and can cause long delays.
Three cups of tea later, I’m still enjoying 101 TIPS FOR WOMEN TRAVELERS and I hope you will, too. Leave your address on our Contact form and I’ll send you a free copy.
