New Zealand – The Real Down Under Wonders
New Zealand has sparkling blue lakes, snow white glaciers, and majestic fiords that are world renowned. I’ve lived in this country and explored every nook and cranny, but I still frequently stop along country roads and lose myself in the glory of the scenic wonders.
However, having said that, I still think New Zealand’s greatest wonders are her people. Kiwis, as they are often called (after their famous flightless bird), are the kindest, most helpful, and friendliest people I have ever met. They have a natural talent for making visitors feel welcome and go out of their way to make sure everyone gets the most from their stay.
Living with a local in New Zealand
Happily, it isn’t difficult for overseas travelers to meet local people. Many country lodges, boutique hotels, and bed-and-breakfast inns are owner-operated. These hosts are generous with their time and genuinely interested in getting to know their guests. So why would anyone opt to stay in a highrise hotel or chain motel and forego the pleasure of Kiwi hospitality? In my mind, this would be like deciding to go on a fast while traveling in France.
One of the benefits of being an authentic traveler in New Zealand is seizing the opportunity to spend time with local hosts. This means benefitting from their knowledge of the area, as well as enjoying their gracious hospitality
New Zealand lodging
To make it easy for you to find them, many of these properties have formed marketing groups. Heritage Inns of New Zealand are historic properties with 4 – and 5-star ratings. Boutique Hotels are also excellent.
Most of the New Zealand Luxury Lodges provide authentic New Zealand experiences, but a few – such as Huka Lodge – have become overpriced status symbols. As you’ll see if you look at the guest list posted on their website (nothing could be more un-Kiwi than posting a list of former guests), it’s a star studded place. Many guests stay there to earn the “bragging rights” of having been in the company of such glitteratti.
Personally, I’d much rather stay at Ascot Parnell in Auckland and the other places mentioned in this New Zealand North Island Trip Report. The people of New Zealand are the real down under wonders and they love meeting authentic travelers – like you.
