Giving Back While Traveling

What do the Dalai Lama, Michael McCarthy, and I have in common? We all believe that it’s important for travelers to show respect for other cultures. For the Dalai Lama, that recently meant eating poi in Hawaii.
In addition to showing respect, we talked about ways to give back while traveling in the developing world. We’re both convinced that showing respect and giving back can help create a more peaceful global community.
I have carried school supplies to Vietnam, South Africa, and Nevis – a beautiful little island in the Caribbean. In each case my help was sincerely appreciated. Donating enough cash to fix a computer at a school in Costa Rica was also easy to do.

It is really important to give something back whilst travelling, whether that’s just putting money into local businesses or embracing the culture and traditions of your destination country. This can make luxury travel much more rewarding, too!
