“We’ve found an exquisite romantic hotel in Tuscany,” readers Deb and Tom Tucker wrote recently. “It’s Borgo Santo Pietro, located about 35 minutes from Siena and one hour from Florence. They offer 15 rooms and suites – all elegantly furnished. It’s the perfect place for Authentic Luxury Travelers.
“There is a main building with suites of varying sizes and all were beautiful. No detail has been spared anywhere on this property. The decor, treatments, amenities are all remarkable. Gorgeous furnishings, antiques, linens, you name it.

“Then there is an ‘out building’ area with other suites in equal decor and appointments, and these have their own gorgeous gardens. This romantic hotel in Tuscany is a popular spot for destination weddings and – in this case – the wedding party and guests take over the entire property. Some of the suites would be good for families, but in general this is not a place for young children.
“The main pool area is very lovely, and they are adding another pool near the pond. When we were there, work was being done on the spa, which is going to be wonderful.”

When I received this note, I wondered if Deb and Tom might be exaggerating, so I checked the Borgo Santo Pietro website and was blown away by the photos. I have every reason to believe that the Tuckers are right: this may just be the best romantic hotel in Tuscany.
Borgo Santo Pietro is a 13th-century stone-clad villa set in 13 acres of gardens overlooking the Serena valley in the southern Tuscan countryside. The original building has been converted into a stylish retreat that is both antique and modern.

Danish owners Claus and Jeanette Thottrup lived and worked for years in London. Their passion for turning Borgo into a luxury hotel is probably born of having lived the high-profile stressed out lifestyle from which their guests are seeking a little shelter, which is what makes the difference between a 5-star hotel and the Borgo experience.

Guests can take cooking lessons; enjoy tasting sessions with local wines, cheeses and honey; take art lessons; play tennis; do yoga; go horse riding or cycling; or laze around the pool and spa.

San Diegans Debbie and Tom Tucker combined their visit to Borgo Santo Pietro with another – their third, I think – stay at Il Campo Cucina, a unique cooking school in Radicondoli where Tuscan mammas teach in their homes and on their farms.

FYI. Borgo closes during the winter, so plan on a warm weather stay. Typically, the property closes at the end of October and reopens in early April.
