Christchurch NZ – Rooms With A View
Christchurch NZ is a little short on places to stay at the moment. The earthquakes that shook the area during 2010 and 2011 wiped out almost 80% of the city central, including several hotels.
So what’s a visitor to do? Had I been looking for a chic boutique hotel, I would have opted for The George, but for a week-long stay in Christchurch NZ my husband and I needed more room(s).
Christchurch NZ Airbnb options
An apartment in a suburb seemed like the perfect solution, so I turned to Airbnb and quickly found a real gem. The “Art House” in Mt. Pleasant is, as the name implies, full of intriguing contemporary art. It also offers almost wall-to-wall water views of the estuary in the foreground and the ocean in the distance.
The second floor apartment (no lift) includes two bedrooms with queen beds, ample closet space, one bathroom (shower, no tub), an attractive living / dining area, a well equipped kitchen, and lofty open beam ceiling. After we arrived we discovered more convenient features like a heated towel rack in the bathroom, really nice bed and bath linens, and a furnished balcony with a view over native bush to the water.
Since we weren’t feeling all that peppy after the long flight from LAX via AKL, we were very pleased to find that our host Suzanne Robin had stocked the fridge with milk, some amazing fig and ginger yogurt, OJ, beer, and a loaf of very yummy Vogel bread made with Chia seeds. All this space and convenience for a whole week cost less than a few nights in a room at The George.
Handy location in Christchurch NZ
Mt Pleasant turned out to be a good base for the things we wanted to do and see. The center of Christchurch NZ was less than 20 minutes away, and the seaside suburb of Sumner was less than 10 minutes from The Art House.
“Our house” was quiet and I slept like a rock every night. In the morning, I loved getting up and putting the kettle on for tea just the way I do at home in La Jolla, California.
Christchurch NZ is gradually recovering from the destruction of the earthquake, and I’m sure that the next time we’re in town there will be more city hotels available. I’m also sure I won’t stay in them. Art House – with its stimulating art and stunning water views – is my new home-away-from home in this part of the world.
Wondering about the best time of year to visit?
Here’s where you’ll find the best New Zealand scenery.

Thanks for the heads up on “The Art House”, although it’s a little late for us now!
We headed to Christchurch at the end of our 18 day motorcycle tour of New Zealand, to find it still unrecognizable but slowly getting back to it’s feet again.
We’ll be heading back in a couple of years and will definitely be keeping the Art House in mind for a stop-over!
