Bermuda Like a Local
Each time I return to Bermuda, I enjoy it more.
I’ve always liked the islands’ combination of tropical climate and old-world English ambiance, and on a recent trip, native Bermudian Barb Jones gave me a great insider tip:
“If your readers want to enjoy Bermuda like a local, they should visit during one of Bermuda’s public holidays. It’s the best way to feel the culture, eat the local food, and enjoy the people.
Enjoy Bermuda like a local on these public holidays:
Bermuda Day, May 24 – This holiday signals the beginning of summer, and is comprised of several events. There is a half marathon from Somerset into Hamilton, where locals are out on the street to cheer on the runners. One of the most important events is the parade in Hamilton led by the Bermuda Regiment Band, featuring dancers, gymnasts, marching bands, and the infectious toe-tapping music of the Bermuda Gombeys.
Cup Match in late July or early August – Two days of cricket, food, and fun. The west end Somerset Cricket Club plays the east end St George’s Cricket Club, and they alternate the location of the match each year. Here, you’ll find local Bermuda cuisine such as fish cakes, conch fritters, and fish chowder. You can also join locals for a game of Crown and Anchor. This gambling game is only legal during the two days of Cup Match.
Easter – Enjoy Bermuda like a local: Take part in a Good Friday tradition by flying a Bermuda kite from the beach, and eating cod fish cakes and hot cross buns.
Bermuda is located in the Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of the U.S. The Reefs is my favorite place to stay because I can snorkel off the resort’s pink sand beach, enjoy traditional Bermudian hospitality, and indulge at their great spa.
