Thanksgiving Travel With Airbnb
Thanksgiving travel plans still up in the air? The winter holidays can be challenging for authentic travelers.
On one hand, we want to share the time with family and close friends. On the other, we’d like to have a great travel experience.
If “over the river and through the woods” is sounding less than melodic this year, you may want to think about picking a destination and finding a home-away-from-home that is the right size and style for your group.
Airbnb – the solution to your Thanksgiving travel dilemma
The Airbnb (pronounced Air B&B) inventory includes 4,000 castles, 2,800 treehouses, 1,000 islands, and 9,000 boats. On a recent night, over 100 people were staying in yurts.
However, the vast majority of Airbnb’s 800,000 listings are for more conventional places to stay, such as apartments, cottages, and family homes. (Just for fun, search for rentals in your neighborhood. You may be surprised.)
My Thanksgiving travel plans
Even though I live in California, it’s been a while since I spent any quality time in San Francisco. (Flying up for the day to get a visa to travel to India doesn’t count.) The holiday break seemed like a great opportunity to rectify that situation, but staying in separate hotel rooms and eating only in restaurants just didn’t sound family-friendly.
Instead I searched on Airbnb and found a large apartment near Ghirardelli Square for less than the cost of the hotels rooms we would have needed. And – not only is the place spacious and well located – it comes with a free parking space in the Ghirardelli Square garage.
So now, whoever gets up first in the morning can put the coffee on – and the adults can enjoy a glass of wine together after the small fry have gone to sleep. Sounds like home to me – except during the day, we’ll be enjoying “the city” (only tourists call it “Frisco”) and some talented chef will prepare Thanksgiving dinner.
More about Airbnb
If you haven’t tried Airbnb, you might want to read “What’s All the Fuss About Airbnb,” which I wrote for Ranch & Coast magazine. I think this might answer your questions about “how it works” and “is it safe?” I also included tips gathered from other authentic travelers as well as my own experiences.
If you still have questions after you’ve read the article, just leave a comment on this post and I’ll reply ASAP.
In any case, I hope you’ll have happy Thanksgiving travel experiences…
Best wishes,
