Insider Tip – Miami Cuban Cuisine
Miami Cuban Cuisine
Bless the concierge at Acqualina Hotel in Sunny Isles who steered us to Little Havana Restaurant in North Miami. The place is huge – I had the feeling it was designed to accommodate large wedding receptions – but oh! what food.
My husband and I put ourselves in the hands of Alex – waiter, cultural narrator, and foodie – who guided us through the menu of Cuban specialties (platos criollos).
Before the night was over, we’d enjoyed marinated roast pork (shredded and melt-in-your-mouth tender), oxtails in wine sauce (rabo encendido en salsa de vino), rice, red beans, and plantains – and I was in love with Miami Cuban cuisine.
While we ate, Alex told us the story of his family’s exodus to Florida, how the Cuban culture has been preserved in the U. S., and what he sees as Cuba’s future.
I love this kind of cultural exchange. It was a real luxury to sit there and chat for hours.
In the course of the evening, he told us how the dishes are prepared, but rather than write down the recipes, I just vowed to return.
Hasta luego, Alex -
