Traveling With Food Allergies
I hope you aren’t letting food allergies keep you at home. Healthy eating on the road is possible even if you follow a gluten free diet or are allergic to corn, dairy, eggs, fish, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, or wheat. I’ve already written about Select Wisely cards for travelers with food allergies, and now I’m excited to share another invaluable resource: Let’s Eat Out with Celiac/Coeliac & Food Allergies.
The authors – Kim Koeller and Robert La France – know first-hand about food allergies. In the book, Kim describes her journey – from diagnosing her food allergies to embracing the gluten- and allergen-free life. Robert, on the other hand, sees food allergies from the other side of the table. During a long restaurant career, he became a specialist in catering to gluten- and allergen-free guests.
A book for travelers with food allergies
In Let’s Eat Out, they describe safe ways to eat in restaurants, on planes, on cruise ships, and on the road. If you normally worry constantly about having a bad reaction to a meal, I think you’ll find this book very helpful.
The authors cover what questions to ask and how to ask them when dining and suggest ways to communicate food requirements, order allergy-free menu items, and enjoy allergy-free meals anywhere in the world.
I was impressed with the great details in the book. Let’s Eat Out addresses seven popular cuisines (American, Chinese, French, Indian, Italian, Mexican and Thai) and gives readers the tools to enjoy each cuisine anywhere in the world while avoiding 10 of the most prevalent allergens (gluten, peanuts, soy, fish, eggs, dairy, wheat, nuts, corn, shellfish).
Included are more than 175 specific menu items, 200 breakfast and beverage suggestions, 300 questions to ask and how to say them in the specific language, 130 snack and light meal ideas, 50 global airlines, and hundreds of tips from 15 chefs and culinary experts, 10 health, medical and nutritional experts and 20 long-term sufferers of various food allergies with extensive experience in dining out throughout the world.
I ordered Let’s Eat Out and the Multi-lingual Phrase Passport, which is part of the Let’s Eat Out! series. There are also 15 gluten and allergy mobile apps for Apple and Android devices and 15 e-books dedicated to eating out with food allergies while traveling.
Please don’t let food allergies keep you at home.
