The Best Food In Paris
This guest post was contributed by Jane Bertch.
Soon after I moved to this incredible city in 2005, I noticed that nearly every American I met asked me where to find the best food in Paris – specifically pastries, chocolates, and cheeses. As a resident of the City of Light, even for such a short time, they considered me their ‘expert’ in all things culinary.
My friends and family weren’t the types to look in guidebooks to find the best food in Paris. They wanted “insider information.” They also wanted to do more than merely taste the specialty foods. They wanted to learn how to make them at home!
But who wants to study on their vacation? The idea of going to a professional cooking school in Paris, even for a short time, is daunting. First there’s the big intimidation factor that we all witnessed in the Julia Child movie when she was studying at Cordon Bleu. Who needs that?
My friends and family aren’t unique. Seasoned travelers to Paris are always looking for something new and different – something no one else has done or even knows about. They want to come away with a memory, to collect authentic experiences, not souvenirs. So when we created La Cuisine Paris, we knew our focus would be on offering high quality classes and food-related walking tours led by professional chefs.
It was also our plan from the beginning to take our guests to off-the-beaten-path markets and stores, where the best food in Paris is found – to those special places known only to professionals and locals.
Exploring culinary secrets and food in Paris with top chefs…
Would you like to take a “sugar walk of the Marais”?
Did you know the palace of Versailles has its very own kitchen garden, planted in the 17th century for Louis XIV, where more than 300 fruits and vegetables flourish in a micro-climate?
Have you ever ventured into the Belly of Paris – Les Halles – where, if you know where to look, you can find the city’s finest and widest array of cheeses, Fois Gras, and sweets?
You’ve tasted French cheese – but have you ever had one of Paris’ leading fromagers take you by the hand through Parisian cheese shops, shopping along the way, culminating in a tasting with wine in a dining room overlooking the Seine?
La Cuisine Paris is located at 80 Quai de l’Hotel de Ville, close to Notre Dame. We offer walking tours and one-of-a-kind cooking classes, in English, led by prominent Parisian chefs and culinary authorities. A complete list of tours and classes is on our Web site.
Next time you come to Paris, I hope you’ll let us take you to Louis XIV’s garden, into the Belly of Paris, or in a few hours, show you and your family how to make the perfect crepe, croissant, baguette, or macaron. (Our macaron decoration classes are, by the way, a big favorite with kids!)
La Cuisine Paris was founded in 2009 by Chicago native Jane Bertch, an international banker who landed in Paris for business, and met her future husband, Oliver Pugliese-Conti. The rest is history.

This is such a delicious posting…I am inspired and feel called to once again, explore the City of Lights from a whole other perspective…Brilliant indeed!
Wow. This story really made me want to go. Just wish the posting had included prices. In case other readers are interested, the 3-hour Belly of Paris tour costs 95 euros – about $125.
Fabulous delicious Paris! Having lived in France for a couple of years I still haven’t managed to get to explore the capital. I reckon when I do plan my trip to Paris – a food tour will be TOP OF THE LIST! What better way to explore the city!!
